Gold Coast Airport Airside Processing Zone

The Gold Coast Airport Airside Processing Zone (APZ) forms a critical component of the broader terminal expansion works delivered under “Project LIFT”, aimed at increasing passenger processing capacity and supporting the airport’s continued growth. The project was developed to respond to increased demand driven by major events such as the 2018 Commonwealth Games, while also accommodating long-term passenger growth and improving operational efficiency within the terminal.

Delivered within a live airside environment, the project required careful planning, staging and coordination to ensure construction activities did not disrupt ongoing airport operations. The works were completed over an accelerated programme of approximately 48 weeks, highlighting the importance of efficient design, procurement and construction methodologies in a highly constrained and operationally sensitive setting.

The structural design solution were developed to support modular and staged construction approaches, allowing key elements of the processing zone to be delivered with minimal impact to existing infrastructure. This included integration with the broader terminal redevelopment, which introduced enhanced processing facilities and flexible operational systems capable of supporting both domestic and international passenger flows.

A key challenge of the project was working within the constraints of an active airside environment, requiring strict compliance with aviation safety standards, limited access windows and coordination with multiple stakeholders. Structural solutions were designed to be robust, efficient and adaptable, enabling rapid construction while maintaining durability and long-term performance in a high-traffic transport environment.

The completed Airside Processing Zone has significantly improved passenger throughput and operational capability at Gold Coast Airport, forming an essential piece of infrastructure that supports both current demand and future expansion. The project demonstrates the delivery of complex infrastructure within a live operational environment, underpinned by coordinated structural engineering solutions.
